What are cookies?
Cookies are files that can be downloaded to your device through web pages. They are essential tools for providing numerous services in the information society. Among other things, they allow a web page to store and retrieve information about a user’s or device’s browsing habits, and depending on the information obtained, they can be used to recognize the user and improve the service offered.
Types of cookies
Depending on who manages the domain from which cookies are sent and processes the data obtained, two types can be distinguished:
- Own cookies: those sent to the user’s terminal equipment from a device or domain managed by the editor itself and from which the service requested by the user is provided.
- Third-party cookies: those sent to the user’s terminal equipment from a device or domain not managed by the editor, but by another entity that processes the data obtained through cookies. If cookies are installed from a device or domain managed by the editor but the information collected is handled by a third party, they are considered third-party cookies.
There is also a second classification based on the length of time they remain stored in the user’s browser:
- Session cookies: designed to collect and store data while the user accesses a web page. They are usually used to store information needed only for the provision of the service requested during a single session (e.g., a shopping cart).
- Persistent cookies: the data remains stored in the terminal and can be accessed and processed for a defined period by the cookie’s responsible party, ranging from a few minutes to several years.
Finally, cookies can be classified by their purpose:
- Technical cookies: allow the user to navigate through a web page and use various options or services (e.g., session control, secure browsing, storing cart content).
- Customization cookies: enable access to the service with predefined settings (e.g., language, regional configuration).
- Analysis cookies: help monitor and analyze user behavior on websites to improve services.
- Advertising cookies: manage advertising spaces efficiently.
- Behavioral advertising cookies: store information on user behavior obtained from browsing habits to create targeted advertising profiles.
- External social network cookies: allow interaction with social media content (e.g., Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn). Usage is governed by the respective social platforms’ privacy policies.
Disabling and deleting cookies
You can allow, block, or delete cookies installed on your device through the configuration options of your browser. Note that disabling cookies may limit some services’ functionality. The methods to disable cookies vary depending on the browser:
